Ornua Foods

The project initiated when Knights Inventory Support Services (KISS) was engaged to evaluate 8,016 engineering stock lines to determine their necessity in the engineering stores. The parameters for this was any item that had not been used in the past three years, which constituted about two-thirds of the total 12,744 engineering stock lines. The high volume clearly required reduction.


The project aimed to enhance the engineering stores' efficiency by decreasing obsolete or redundant stock, liberate space by relocating items to an onsite storage container, and provide impartial recommendations for overall improvements.


The project achieved a reduction in on-site stock value by £430,000 (15%).

A decrease in store lines by 2,713 (21%)

An increase in non-stock items by 732 (11% of current holdings)

Expanded the available space in the front store by 35% (from 6655 to 4325 locations).


The project progressed smoothly, adapting as understanding of the operations deepened. An unforeseen delay occurred due to the absence of a comprehensive, current list of factory floor machinery, necessitating an additional audit of the machines and serial numbers, which slightly extended the project's timeline.

After a personnel termination, the engineering stores had been dormant for 18 months with minimal maintenance, periodic checks, or supervision. KISS was enlisted to inventory, organize, and modernise the engineering stores. The stores were outdated, disordered, and poorly cataloged, evident from the reliance on pen-and-paper processes, some completely inaccessible storage areas, and inconsistent labeling.


Consequently, the store's budget was a black hole, with no way to forecast costs from month to month.


KISS dedicated nine months on-site to operate the stores while concurrently implementing a barcode system for labeling, wireless scanner integration, creating new stock control processes and custom systems within Excel, and revamping the engineering stores.


This initiative uncovered nearly £200,000 of inventory previously unknown to the business, enabling a firmer control over costs and stock, which was then handed over to the internal staff at the contract's conclusion.
